What to Serve with Chicken Pot Pie (23 Sides I Love)

If you're wondering what to serve with chicken pot pie, the best sides are the ones that cut through the creamy filling and buttery pastry: a tangy salad, a garlicky green vegetable like broccolini or Brussels sprouts, and something to mop up the sauce, like garlic bread. Pot pie already has protein, veggies and carbs, so one or two sides is plenty.

In this post I'm sharing 23 side dishes from my own recipe collection that I love with pot pie, from 5-minute cucumber salads and stir-fried broccolini to ciabatta garlic bread, crispy skillet potatoes and a miso pecan pie for dessert. Most of them cook on the stovetop, in the air fryer or need no cooking at all, so they won't fight your pie for oven space.

Easy Chicken Pot Pie with Cream of Chicken Soup recipe packed full of vegetables, chicken, and seasoned with paprika and oregano.

Whenever I make my chicken pot pie with cream of chicken soup for friends or family, it gets rave reviews, and I could honestly eat my filo "chimi-chicken" pie every week. But I don't know about you but I always love something to serve with pie, so I've also included a pairing guide for each type of pot pie, three easy dinner menus, and my tips for timing everything with one oven.

Every side here works just as well with turkey pot pie, so save or screenshot this one for Thanksgiving leftovers too!

    Start with the pot pie

Before we get to what to serve with chicken pot pie... we need to start with the pie itself! If you haven't picked your pie yet, here are some of my best recipes. They're all top-crust pies (just a pastry lid, no pastry base), and most are made in one oven-proof pan.

    • Easy Chicken Pot Pie with Cream of Chicken Soup: chicken thighs, leeks, mushrooms, carrot and peas in canned cream of chicken soup, under squares of puff pastry. It's all made in one pan in about an hour.
    • Easy Chicken Pot Pie using Puff Pastry: a speedy one with frozen veggies, cream and a spoonful of 'nduja for warmth (smoked paprika, harissa or chipotle paste work too).
    • Easy Chicken Pot Pie (Filo Pastry): my "chimi-chicken" pie, with a herby chimichurri-inspired filling, a crunchy filo (phyllo) top and fresh chimichurri spooned over at the end. It's ready in 40 minutes and is great for when you want something with a bit of extra flavor.
    • Marry Me Chicken Pie: all the viral marry me chicken flavors (sun-dried tomatoes, parmesan and cream) with butter beans and spinach under crumpled filo. You can make the filling a day ahead.
    • Simple Boursin Pie: a vegetarian pie with mushrooms, tomatoes and butter beans baked in Boursin and cream. I grew up eating Boursin cheese, so this one's close to my heart.
    • Mushroom Pie: chestnut mushrooms, black beans, leeks, cheddar and wholegrain mustard under golden filo. SO good.

No time to cook the chicken? My filo pie and marry me chicken pie both work with pre-cooked chicken, so the leftovers from my convection oven roast chicken are perfect, and my leftover chicken recipes have plenty more ideas. And if you've got a can of cream of chicken soup but no pastry, my cheesy baked chicken with cream of chicken soup (rated 4.99 stars by over 50 of you!) goes with almost every side on this list.

How I pick a side for pot pie

A chicken pot pie already has chicken, vegetables, a creamy sauce and pastry, so it doesn't need much. When I'm deciding what to serve with chicken pot pie, I ask myself three questions:

    • Is there something sharp? Vinegar, lemon, lime, pickles or a mustardy dressing cut through the richness, and that's the one thing a pot pie can't do for itself. Working in a Vietnamese restaurant taught me that rich food almost always comes with something fresh and sour on the side, and it's just as true for pot pie.
    • Is there something green and crunchy? The filling is soft all the way through, so a crisp salad or charred greens make every bite more interesting.
    • Is there anything to mop up the sauce? A top-crust pie leaves lots of creamy sauce at the bottom of the dish, which is where garlic bread, focaccia or mashed potatoes come in. If you're making a double-crust pie, skip the bread and go for a salad instead.

Pick one or two of these and you're good to go.

Fresh, tangy salads for chicken pot pie

These are my top picks for what to serve with chicken pot pie, because they bring the acidity and crunch a pot pie is missing. Four of them need no cooking at all, and most keep in the fridge for a few days.

    1. The BEST Apple Fennel Salad

Apple fennel salad with pomegranate seeds and a creamy blue cheese tahini dressing.

Thinly sliced apple and fennel are tossed with pomegranate seeds in a creamy blue cheese, tahini and sumac dressing with Dijon and honey. It's crisp, sweet, sour and a little bit funky, which is exactly what you want next to buttery pastry and a creamy filling.

There's no cooking at all, so it only takes 10 minutes. Even better, the apple and fennel stay crunchy once dressed, so you can make it up to 3 days ahead and keep it in the fridge.

    2. Easy 5-Minute Cucumber Dill Salad

Creamy cucumber dill salad with yogurt, fresh dill and mint.

This tzatziki-style cucumber salad is my pick for a pot pie with a bit of heat, like my 'nduja chicken pot pie.

Thinly sliced cucumbers go into a dressing of thick yogurt, fresh dill and mint, garlic, lemon juice and olive oil. It's cool, fresh and takes 5 minutes. It became a family favorite one summer when my partner's parents grew so many cucumbers that we were making cucumber salads every day!

You can make it a few hours ahead, and it keeps in the fridge for up to 3 days.

    3. Easy Spicy Cucumber Salad

Spicy cucumber salad in a peanut butter and gochujang dressing with scallions and sesame seeds.

If you like your sides with a kick, try this one.

The cucumbers and scallions are tossed in a peanut butter and gochujang dressing with rice vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic and chili oil. I ate so much smashed cucumber salad traveling through China, and this is that idea mixed with my love of Korean flavors. It might sound like an unusual partner for pot pie, but the vinegar and chili do the same job as a pickle.

It's ready in about 6 minutes. My top tip is to drain the chilled cucumber slices before you add the dressing, so the salad doesn't go watery.

    4. Butter Bean Salad (10 Minutes)

Vietnamese-inspired butter bean salad with herbs, roasted peanuts and fried shallots.

This one has a special place in my heart. After falling in love with the food in Vietnam, I went on to work in a Vietnamese restaurant, and this salad uses a dressing inspired by nước chấm: fish sauce, lime juice, sugar, garlic and fresh red chili.

The dressing goes over soft butter beans, cucumber, carrot, radishes, scallions, cilantro and mint, with roasted peanuts and fried shallots on top for crunch. It's salty, sour, a little sweet and so fresh, so it cuts straight through a creamy pie.

It takes 10 minutes and keeps for 3 days (add extra herbs and the crunchy bits just before serving). Just one note: my marry me chicken pie and Boursin pie already have butter beans inside, so pair this salad with one of my other pies.

    5. Simple Green Salad with Ciabatta Croutons

Golden homemade ciabatta croutons with parmesan and oregano on top of a bowl of green salad.

Sometimes the best side is the simplest one. I grew up in the South of France, where a green salad with a sharp mustard vinaigrette is on the table at most meals, and it's still my go-to with any kind of pie.

Toss a few handfuls of crisp leaves with Dijon mustard, red wine vinegar and olive oil (roughly one part vinegar to three parts oil), then pile on my homemade ciabatta croutons. They take 15 minutes in the oven or about 5 in the air fryer, and when my partner first tried them, he couldn't believe how much better they were than store-bought.

For more ideas, my crunchy salad toppings guide has 12 ways to make a simple salad feel like more.

    Green vegetable sides

A pot pie is soft and creamy all the way through, so when I'm deciding what to serve with chicken pot pie, I always want something green with a bit of bite. The Brussels sprouts and broccolini below are my weeknight go-tos, because they're both done in one skillet in 20 minutes or less while the pie bakes. The two casseroles, on the other hand, are are cozier and richer, so I save those for special occasions and big family dinners.

    6. Easy Brussels Sprouts and Bacon

Pan-fried Brussels sprouts and bacon with a balsamic and maple glaze.

This is the festive side I always recommend for my chicken pot pie using puff pastry post, and they're a great match.

Brussels sprouts are pan-fried with crispy bacon and garlic, then glazed with balsamic vinegar and a little maple syrup. That sweet and sour glaze is what makes it work so well with pot pie, and the smoky bacon is lovely with creamy chicken. For a little bonus, finish it with grated parmesan.

And because it's all made in one skillet, it's ready in 20 minutes.

    7. Stir-Fried Broccolini (My Favorite Version)

Stir-fried broccolini in a Thai-inspired sauce with cilantro, red onion and sesame seeds.

Broccolini (or tenderstem broccoli) is one of the sides I suggest in my cream of chicken soup pot pie post, and this is my favorite way to cook it.

It's pan-fried in sesame oil with garlic and ginger, then tossed in a Thai-inspired sauce of fish sauce, lime juice, sugar, chili flakes, red onion, cilantro and toasted sesame seeds. It's tangy, a little spicy and still has some bite, which is perfect next to a soft, creamy filling.

It takes 15 minutes on the stovetop. However, this recipe only serves two, so just double it for four.

    8. Quick Creamy Green Bean Casserole (without Mushroom Soup)

Creamy green bean casserole without mushroom soup, topped with crispy fried onions.

Green beans are also on my list of sides for my cream of chicken soup pot pie, and this is my creamy holiday version. I created it for my mum, who hates mushrooms, so there's no can of mushroom soup in sight.

The green beans are cooked in a sauce of onion, garlic, light cream, chicken stock and parmesan, then topped with crispy fried onions and baked at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes. It's 40 minutes start to finish, and it freezes well too.

Because it's creamy, I'd save this one for Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving when there's a whole spread, with something tangy on the table as well.

    9. Quick Broccoli Casserole with Cheddar Cheese

Broccoli casserole with cheddar cheese and a golden Ritz cracker topping.

This one's for feeding a crowd. Broccoli florets are baked in a creamy sauce of cream of mushroom soup, mayonnaise, onion, garlic, paprika and plenty of cheddar, under a crunchy Ritz cracker topping.

It's a big, cozy casserole that serves 6, so it's another one for Thanksgiving or a family get-together rather than a weeknight. The best part is that you can make the mixture up to 3 days ahead and just bake it on the day.

    10. Fire Cabbage (Roasted Cabbage Wedges)

Roasted cabbage wedges in a spicy gochujang sauce with melted mozzarella and chives.

Finally, this is my wild card, and it's one for the spice lovers.

Thick cabbage wedges are seared, then roasted in a sweet and spicy gochujang sauce with gochugaru, soy sauce, honey, sesame oil, shallots, garlic and ginger, before being finished with melted mozzarella and chives. It's sticky and fiery, and the heat is a really fun contrast to a mild, creamy pot pie.

It's low-effort and made in one pan, but it does spend about 45 minutes in the oven at 355°F (180°C), so it's best on a night when you're not short on oven space.

    Potato and comfort sides

Potatoes with pot pie can be a bit of a debate, but if your pie doesn't have potatoes in it (none of mine do) or you're feeding hungry people, a potato side turns it into a proper feast. I personally LOVE potatoes with chicken pot pie.

    11. Easy Skillet Fried Potatoes and Onions

Crispy skillet fried potatoes and onions with parmesan and chives.

When the oven's full of pie, these are my potato side of choice, because they're made entirely on the stovetop.

Chunks of potato and sliced white onion are fried in olive oil with paprika, salt and pepper until golden and crispy, then finished with parmesan and chives or dill. You only need three main ingredients and it's ready in 30 minutes. Crispy potatoes next to a soft, creamy filling is such a satisfying combo.

    12. Creamy Mashed Potatoes (from my Loaded Mash Bowl)

Creamy mashed potatoes in a bowl.

Mashed potato is another side I love to serve with my cream of chicken soup pot pie, and spooning that creamy filling over a pile of mash is pure comfort.

For pot pie night, just make the mash from my loaded mashed potato bowl: boil the potatoes until tender, then blend them with butter and milk until smooth. Skip the roasted vegetable toppings, or keep the honey harissa yogurt for a little kick. This one really reminds me of my childhood.

    13. Easy Crispy Smashed Potato Salad

Crispy smashed potato salad with a creamy yogurt dressing, cucumber, red onion and chives.

Want potatoes and something tangy in one? This is it.

Baby potatoes are smashed and roasted with paprika at 425°F (220°C) until really crispy, then tossed in a creamy yogurt and mayo dressing with lemon, garlic, cucumber, red onion, scallions and chives.

It takes an hour, so it's more of a weekend side. You can store the potatoes and dressing separately for up to 3 days, then re-crisp the potatoes at 425°F for 5 to 10 minutes before tossing.

    14. Easy Old Fashioned Baked Macaroni and Cheese

Old fashioned baked macaroni and cheese with a golden cheddar and mozzarella topping.

Mac and cheese with pot pie is comfort food on comfort food... It's a family favorite around the festive and winter season, which makes it perfect for a big holiday pot pie spread.

The cheese sauce is made with butter, garlic, flour, milk, smoked paprika, cheddar and mozzarella, then it's baked at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes and broiled until golden. It makes 4 large portions in 45 minutes. If it's on the table, make sure there's a tangy salad there too!

Bread for mopping up the sauce

A top-crust pot pie always leaves creamy sauce at the bottom of the dish that needs soaking up, which is why bread is one of the best things to serve with chicken pot pie.

    15. The ULTIMATE Ciabatta Garlic Bread

Emily Roz holding a piece of her ciabatta garlic bread with parsley and parmesan, sliced on a board.

Garlic bread is one of the sides I suggest for my Boursin pie, and it's brilliant with any pot pie that has lots of sauce.

You only need ciabatta, soft salted butter, fresh garlic, parsley and parmesan. It bakes at 410°F (190°C fan) for 8 to 11 minutes, which is the same temperature as my cream of chicken soup pot pie, so it can go in for the last 10 minutes of the pie's cooking time. Or make it in the air fryer in 5 to 8 minutes.

You can also freeze it before baking for up to 3 months, which is so handy for busy weeknights.

    16. Easy Focaccia (3 Ways)

Homemade focaccia with rosemary and olive oil.

For a weekend pot pie dinner, homemade focaccia makes the whole table feel special. I once made this four times in a single week, so you know it's good!

The dough needs bread flour, instant yeast, warm water, olive oil and salt, and most of the 3 hours is just rising time. The classic rosemary version is perfect for mopping up pot pie sauce, and the cheesy chimichurri version is made for my filo "chimi-chicken" pie. It freezes for up to 3 months too.

    17. 2-Ingredient Bread Bites

Golden 2-ingredient bread bites made with self-rising flour and Greek yogurt.

No oven space? These little bread bites are made in the air fryer with just self-rising flour and Greek yogurt. Such an easy win!!

They take 20 minutes start to finish (only 8 minutes in the air fryer), they're light and fluffy, and they're one of my favorite snacks. Make them while the pie bakes, then use them to scoop up every last bit of sauce. The recipe makes 8, so double it for a crowd, and you can stuff them with cheese, olives or herbs too.

    18. Cheese and Bacon Muffins

Savory cheese and bacon muffins with scallions.

Biscuits and cornbread muffins are classic sides for pot pie, and these savory muffins fill exactly the same spot.

They're packed with cheddar, mozzarella, bacon and scallions, with Greek yogurt keeping them soft. They need 5 minutes of prep and 25 minutes in the oven at 355°F (180°C fan), and the recipe makes 12. They're one of my favorite things to bake for breakfast or as a midweek snack, so any leftovers won't go to waste! They freeze for up to 3 months and reheat in about 10 minutes.

Appetizers to serve while the pie bakes

If you're having people over, these give everyone something to nibble on while the pie finishes in the oven.

    19. Carrot Ginger Soup

Bright orange carrot ginger soup with coconut milk.

A small cup of soup before the pie feels really cozy, and I'd go for this one because it's fiery and fresh rather than heavy.

Carrots and sweet potato are roasted with turmeric and cumin, then simmered with lots of fresh ginger, lemongrass, red chili and coconut milk before being blended until smooth. It takes 40 minutes and freezes for up to 3 months, so you can make it well ahead and just reheat it. Serve small portions so everyone saves room for pie!

    20. 5-Minute Bruschetta Dip

Whipped cream cheese and feta bruschetta dip topped with garlicky cherry tomatoes and basil.

This is my friends' favorite appetizer, and it's perfect for nibbling while the pie is in the oven.

Cream cheese and feta are whipped together until smooth, then topped with garlicky cherry tomatoes, basil, lemon zest and balsamic glaze. Serve it with warm baguette slices. It's ready in 5 minutes, and you can keep the whipped cheese and the tomatoes separately in the fridge for up to 3 days.

    21. White Bean Dip

Smooth white bean dip topped with spiced caramelized onions.

This is one of Henry's favorite dips I've ever made.

Cannellini beans are blended with tahini, lemon juice, garlic and olive oil until silky, then topped with spiced caramelized onions, with harissa and honey in there for a little sweet heat. Serve it with toast, veggie sticks or the bread bites above.

    Desserts after chicken pot pie

When it comes to a dessert to serve with chicken pot pie, you want something you can make ahead, because the oven is busy with the pie.

    22. Miso Pecan Pie

Miso pecan pie on a black plate, showing the top layer of caramelized pecans.

Pie after pie? HECK YEH! This is the dessert I make all the time for friends and family when the weather turns colder.

A spoonful of white miso in the filling gives it a salted caramel flavor that I'm obsessed with. It's baked in shortcrust pastry with butter, maple syrup, golden syrup, eggs and pecans, and it's even better made earlier in the day or the day before, which means one less thing to do on pot pie night. Serve it with whipped cream. It's perfect for Thanksgiving too.

    23. Mince Pies

7 homemade mince pies on a green serving platter.

If your pot pie dinner falls in December, end it the British way with homemade mince pies. This is the recipe I make for friends and family all through the festive season.

The filling is a spiced mix of dried fruit, citrus, apple, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg, wrapped in shortcrust pastry, with an optional lemon cream cheese filling. The recipe makes 9 in under an hour. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm.

5 no-recipe sides for busy nights

When you just need something on the table in 5 minutes, these all do the job:

    • Cranberry sauce: a spoonful of store-bought cranberry sauce is sweet, tart and very Thanksgiving.
    • Applesauce: the same idea, a little sweet and sharp next to the savory filling.
    • Pickles or cornichons: a small bowl on the table gives you that hit of acidity with zero effort.
    • Arugula with lemon and parmesan: toss a few handfuls with lemon juice, olive oil, salt and shaved parmesan.
    • Buttered peas or green beans: steam them and finish with butter, salt and a squeeze of lemon.
    • Store-bought mashed potato: I'm not judging, you've had a long day.

Which side goes with which pot pie

Each of my pot pies is a little different, so here's what to serve with chicken pot pie, depending on which one you make.

3 easy chicken pot pie dinner menus

    An easy weeknight dinner

    • Chicken pot pie with cream of chicken soup
    • Stir-fried broccolini

That's it! The pie is already a full meal, so one green, tangy side is all you need. If you've got 5 extra minutes, add the cucumber dill salad.

    Friends over for dinner

    • To start: bruschetta dip with warm baguette
    • Main: marry me chicken pie, with the filling made the day before
    • Sides: apple fennel salad (make it in the morning) and ciabatta garlic bread
    • Dessert: miso pecan pie, baked the day before

Almost everything is done ahead, so you actually get to sit down with your friends.

    A holiday or Friendsgiving spread

    • Two pies: a doubled chicken pot pie using puff pastry and a mushroom pie for the vegetarians
    • Sides: green bean casserole, Brussels sprouts and bacon, mac and cheese and cheese and bacon muffins
    • Something fresh: apple fennel salad or a plain arugula and lettuce salad with vinaigrette
    • Dessert: miso pecan pie or mince pies

You can prep the puff pastry pie in advance and bake it just before everyone arrives.

My top tips for a stress-free pot pie dinner

    • Let the stovetop and air fryer do the work. Your oven is busy with the pie, so lean on sides like the Brussels sprouts and bacon, stir-fried broccolini, skillet potatoes and air fryer (if you have one) bread bites, or go for a no-cook salad.
    • Share the oven temperature. If a side needs baking, pick one that cooks at the same temperature as your pie. My ciabatta garlic bread and cream of chicken soup pot pie both bake at 410°F (190°C fan), so the bread just goes in for the last 10 minutes.
    • Don't double up on cream. A creamy pie plus a creamy casserole plus mac and cheese can feel really heavy. If you do go all out for the holidays, make sure there's at least one sharp salad on the table.
    • Don't repeat what's in the pie. My puff pastry pot pie uses a frozen mix with broccoli and beans in it, so I'd serve Brussels sprouts or a salad instead. And skip the butter bean salad with my marry me chicken pie and Boursin pie, since they already have butter beans inside.
    • Make the salad first. Most of the salads here keep in the fridge for up to 3 days, so make them before you start the pie. For the spicy cucumber salad, drain the chilled cucumber slices before dressing so it stays crunchy.

Chicken pot pie side dish FAQs

What is the best side dish for chicken pot pie?

A tangy salad or a garlicky green vegetable is the best side for chicken pot pie, because it cuts through the creamy filling and buttery pastry. My favorites are my apple fennel salad, cucumber dill salad and stir-fried broccolini. Add garlic bread or mashed potatoes if your pie has lots of sauce (a personal yes from me!!).

What vegetables go well with chicken pot pie?

Green vegetables with a bit of crunch or char work best, like broccolini, Brussels sprouts, green beans and roasted cabbage. Cook them with something sharp, such as lime, balsamic vinegar or lemon, and try not to repeat the peas and carrots that are usually already in the filling.

Do you need a side dish with chicken pot pie?

Not really. Chicken pot pie already has chicken, vegetables, a creamy sauce and pastry, so it's a complete meal on its own. That said, one fresh side makes it feel lighter and more balanced. On a weeknight, one green vegetable or a quick salad is all you need.

What salad goes with chicken pot pie?

A crisp, sharp salad is perfect. I love a green salad with a mustardy vinaigrette and homemade croutons, an apple fennel salad with a creamy blue cheese dressing, or a quick cucumber dill salad. Anything with vinegar, lemon or a bit of crunch will balance the rich filling.

What bread goes with chicken pot pie?

Garlic bread, focaccia, savory muffins, biscuits or dinner rolls all go well, especially with a top-crust pot pie that leaves lots of sauce in the dish. If your pie has a pastry base as well as a lid, you can skip the bread, since there's already plenty of pastry.

Can you serve potatoes with chicken pot pie?

Yes! Mashed potatoes are a classic with chicken pot pie, especially if the filling doesn't already have potatoes in it. Crispy skillet potatoes or a tangy smashed potato salad are great too. Just add a green vegetable or salad alongside so the meal doesn't feel too heavy.

What dessert goes with chicken pot pie?

Pick a dessert you can make ahead, since the oven is busy with the pie. I love a miso pecan pie or mince pies at Christmas. Apple pie, a fruit cobbler or something light and fruity also works well after a rich, savory main.

Do these sides work with turkey pot pie?

Absolutely. Turkey pot pie has the same creamy filling and pastry top, so every side on this list works just as well. It's a great way to use up Thanksgiving leftovers, with green bean casserole, Brussels sprouts and bacon or a tangy salad on the side.

Save these chicken pot pie sides

I'll keep adding new sides to this list as I develop them, so pin this post or bookmark it for the next time you're wondering what to serve with chicken pot pie.

If you tried any of these sides with your pot pie, let me know which combo you went for in the 📝 comments below. I really hope you find a new favorite!
